Young children naturally use their feet to brake on a balance bike. While this might wear out shoes faster, it helps kids learn to brake in a controlled way, avoiding abrupt stops. A balance bike with a brake allows the child to use a handlebar brake lever to operate a band brake that slows the rear wheel. Once the child is comfortable with the bike, they can practice using the handbrake through playful exercises, preparing them for bike brakes later on. On downhill slopes or at higher speeds, a well-adjusted handbrake can complement foot braking and help the child stop more quickly.
